Commit To Get Fit 2004

‘Commit To Get Fit’, a huge national fitness campaign running this summer aims to encourage up too 100,000 people to improve their fitness through exercise.

Now in it’s 13th year, ‘Commit To Get Fit’ runs throughout July and August, and will see over 500 health clubs and leisure centres offering free fitness assessments and discounted short term memberships – The perfect way to help you to a healthier lifestyle!

Supported by celebrities such as Steve Redgrave, Seb Coe, Sally Gunnell, Sue Barker & Arnold Schwarzenegger, ‘Commit To Get Fit’ has generated more than £1 million for charity. This year’s proceeds will be donated to Diabetes UK. Benet Middleton, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, says: “We are so pleased to be working with Commit To Get Fit this summer because physical activity is a vital part of both managing diabetes and helping to prevent the condition. In fact, in some cases, Type 2 diabetes can be directly linked to obesity and inactive lifestyles.”

‘Commit To Get Fit’ is organised by The Fitness Industry Association (FIA), and is supported by the NHS. Nigel Wallace, Executive Director FIA, says: "This summer our sites will be offering the public the chance to take the Rockport Walking Fitness Assessment – a very simple one mile walking test that can be completed on a treadmill. The test provides a result whatever pace people walk, so it is ideal for those new to exercise or who haven’t been physically active for some time. Professional instructors will be on hand in health clubs to administer the test, which is a well-respected measurement of cardiovascular fitness. We hope that participants will retake the test after completing the campaign and see the real difference they can make to their fitness in a matter of weeks.”

Over 500 UK health & leisure clubs are taking part nation-wide, including gym chains such as LivingWell, Kinetika, and LAFitness, and will be offering special discounts and ‘try before you buy’ schemes.

So why not take advantage of a life changing offer to get some exercise?!

Sir Steve Redgrave
Vice President Diabetes UK

“I am delighted to support this year's Commit to Get Fit campaign. As someone who has diabetes, I know that physical activity can help with diabetes control. In some cases taking exercise can also prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes from developing. Commit to Get Fit is a great way of encouraging us all to get fit and feel healthy.”
